Ghana falls to 61st in the 2025 Global Peace Index Ranking
Ghana has dropped six places in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), ranking 61st worldwide compared to 55th in 2024. The fall reflects a decline in overall peacefulness, though Ghana still maintains a relatively high level of peace.
Within Sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana has also slipped out of the top five most peaceful countries. Nations including Mauritius, Botswana, Namibia, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Madagascar are now ranked higher.
The Global Peace Index, produced annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), measures peace across 163 countries using 23 indicators such as societal safety, conflict, and militarisation. The 2025 report highlights that global peacefulness continues to decline.
According to the IEP, rising geopolitical tensions, growing militarisation, weakened alliances, and economic uncertainty are driving many countries into greater instability. These factors, it notes, are at their worst since the end of World War II.
Globally, Iceland retains its position as the most peaceful country, followed by Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland. At the bottom of the index are nations such as Russia, Ukraine, Sudan, and Afghanistan, with Yemen ranked as one of the least peaceful.
