A New Chapter in Ghana-Algeria Relations
On May 2, 2025, Ghana and Algeria took a significant step to strengthen their longstanding relationship by signing a visa waiver agreement. The deal, formalized during an official visit to Algiers by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, allows citizens of both nations to travel visa-free, fostering easier movement and collaboration.
The agreement was a highlight of Ablakwa’s meetings with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. Beyond the visa waiver, both countries committed to deeper ties, including launching direct flights between Accra and Algiers, a strategic oil and gas partnership, and enhanced security cooperation. These initiatives aim to revive the Joint Economic Cooperation program, dormant for years.

A key focus of the visit was education, with Algeria agreeing to increase scholarships for Ghanaian students in fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering. This move aligns with Africa’s growing emphasis on tech-driven development, offering Ghanaian youth new opportunities to gain expertise in high-demand sectors.
The partnership builds on a historic bond dating back to 1963, when Ghana became one of the first nations to establish a diplomatic mission in Algeria. This agreement not only renews that friendship but also positions both countries to benefit from shared economic and security goals, marking a promising future for Ghana-Algeria relations.
