Agreement to Boost Trade, Tourism, and Diplomacy Between Ghana and Morocco


Ghana and Morocco have taken a significant step toward waiving visa requirements for all travelers between the two countries. This move is expected to enhance diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the West African and North African nations.

Parliamentary Approval and Expanded Cooperation Between Ghana and Morocco

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that the visa waiver agreement will be submitted to both parliaments for ratification in the coming weeks. Beyond easing travel restrictions, the two countries have committed to strengthening cooperation in agribusiness, tourism, and security. This decision follows high-level discussions between Ablakwa and Morocco’s Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil.

Clarification on Reports of Violence in Morocco

Addressing recent social media claims regarding violence against Africans in Morocco, Ablakwa stated that Ambassador Ouaadil had dismissed allegations that 700 Africans were killed in the country. She clarified that the widely shared footage originated from a June 2022 border incident, which resulted in 23 fatalities. No Ghanaian casualties were reported in the event.

Increase in Scholarships for Ghanaian Students

As part of the deepening relationship, Morocco has doubled its annual scholarships for Ghanaian students, raising the number from 90 to 180. This expansion will provide more Ghanaian students with opportunities to study in Moroccan institutions.

Ghana-Russia Diplomatic Engagements

In a separate development, Ablakwa also met with Russia’s Ambassador to Ghana, Sergei Berdnikov, to discuss bilateral cooperation. During their meeting, Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to neutrality and emphasized the country’s dedication to being a voice for global peace.
