Ghana Athletics is set to host a World Athletics Level 1 coaching course from June 8th to 14th, 2025, at the National Sports College in Winneba. The course, which is part of the association’s capacity-building program for coaches, aims to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to train young athletes.
According to Mr. Bawah Fuseini, the President of Ghana Athletics, the course is designed to build the capacity of coaches in Ghana, and the certificates awarded will be recognized internationally. The lecturers for the course are World Athletics-certified, ensuring that participants receive high-quality training.
The course covers 13 areas related to athletics coaching, including coaches’ philosophy, injury prevention, and performance maintenance. To participate in the course, coaches must meet certain criteria, including having the basics in coaching or a related field. This requirement was introduced to improve the pass rate, which was previously low.
Mr. Fuseini expressed his expectation that more coaches would attend the course and achieve high pass rates, citing the success of previous courses. He noted that the last course held in Kumasi had a pass rate of about 75%, and he is hoping for more than 80% this time around.
The Ghana Athletics’ initiative to build the capacity of coaches is expected to have a positive impact on the performance of Ghanaian athletes.
