The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a monkeypox (Mpox) case involving a 15-year-old boy from the Bia West District in the Western North Region. The patient reported symptoms including fever, body aches, and a rash that first appeared on his palms and face. The boy had sought treatment on September 25, 2024, after symptoms persisted for three days.
The GHS has identified 25 individuals who had direct contact with the patient, placing them under active monitoring to prevent the virus’s spread. Nationwide, 230 suspected monkeypox cases have been recorded across 88 districts.
A public health investigation has been initiated, and the World Health Organization (WHO) will be informed as part of Ghana’s coordinated response to the virus. Monkeypox symptoms include a painful rash, swollen lymph nodes, fever, and fatigue, and while most patients recover, severe illness can occur in some cases.
The public is advised to adhere to health protocols to prevent transmission.
