PURC Hikes Electricity Rates, Keeps Water Rates Steady
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs for all users starting July 1, 2025. The decision, made public on June 25, 2025, follows a quarterly review to adjust prices based on economic factors like exchange rates, inflation, and fuel costs. Water tariffs will stay unchanged.
The hike aims to help utility companies recover costs, including GH¢488 million in unpaid arrears from 2024. PURC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Ishmael Ackah, said the increase balances the need for a stable power supply while keeping costs low for consumers. This follows a 14.75% electricity tariff hike in May 2025, which also raised water rates by 4.02%.
The adjustment considers the cedi’s recent strength and lower inflation, but rising fuel costs and the hydro-thermal power mix pushed the need for a small hike. PURC spread half of the arrears recovery to future quarters to ease the burden on users. The full tariff schedule will be available on PURC’s website.
The decision has sparked concerns, with groups like CUTS International Accra and the Centre for Environmental Management calling for a pause due to lack of transparency in the process. They cited PURC’s failure to engage the public on new pricing factors, like fuel costs and reserve margins, as unfair.
As Ghanaians brace for higher bills, PURC insists the hike is needed to keep power supply steady. The commission urged consumers to use electricity wisely to manage costs, while promising to monitor service quality to ensure fair value.
