GFA Warns Against Disruptions as Security Concerns Grow
An Accra District Court has sentenced 21-year-old Mohammed Huzeinu to 100 days in prison for invading the pitch during Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, 2025.
Security Breach and Financial Implications
Huzeinu’s unauthorized entry onto the field disrupted the game and could result in financial penalties for the Ghana Football Association (GFA). International football governing bodies, including FIFA and CAF, typically impose fines of at least $10,000 for such security breaches.
The GFA has strongly condemned the act, warning that disciplinary measures will be enforced to prevent similar incidents.
Fan’s Attempt to Reach Antoine Semenyo
Eyewitnesses say Huzeinu ran onto the pitch in an attempt to embrace Ghanaian striker Antoine Semenyo, but security personnel intervened swiftly and escorted him off the field. He was immediately arrested and detained at the Ministries Police Station before being arraigned and sentenced.
Growing Concerns Over Stadium Security
This marks the fifth pitch invasion at a Black Stars match in the past five years, raising concerns about stadium security in Ghana. Similar breaches occurred during AFCON qualifiers against Angola and South Africa, leading to financial penalties for the country.
Authorities hope Huzeinu’s sentencing will serve as a strong deterrent, reinforcing the need for discipline and adherence to match-day regulations to protect Ghana’s international football reputation.
