In a recent revelation, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has disclosed that it disbursed a staggering $80,000 in fines to FIFA due to the accumulation of yellow cards by Black Stars players during the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The GFA’s Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, made this disclosure during an interview with Accra-based Angel TV.

The performance of the Black Stars in the prestigious global football tournament was met with disappointment as they finished at the bottom of their group, which included Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay. Their campaign began with a closely contested 3-2 defeat to Portugal, but they showed resilience and claimed a 3-2 victory over South Korea in the subsequent match.

However, Ghana’s aspirations to progress to the knockout stage were dashed in their final group game when they suffered a 2-0 loss against Uruguay, thereby eliminating them from the competition.

One major setback for the team during their World Cup journey was the accumulation of eight yellow cards, with four of them being picked up in the opening clash against Portugal. Each yellow card attracted a hefty $10,000 fine as per FIFA’s regulations, culminating in a total fine of $80,000 for the GFA.

“Asante Twum confirmed the payment of $80,000 for yellow cards acquisition at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar,” reported GTV Sports+.

The news of this substantial financial penalty has raised discussions among football enthusiasts and stakeholders, with some expressing concern over the number of yellow cards accumulated by the Black Stars. Others have pointed out that such fines place an additional financial burden on national football associations, making it a topic of interest for future discussions at the international level.

While Ghana’s journey in the 2022 World Cup did not meet the expectations of fans, there remains hope for the team’s resurgence in future international tournaments. As the football world eagerly awaits the next global spectacle, the GFA and its supporters are determined to learn from this experience and pave the way for a brighter future for Ghanaian football.
