The 2025 African Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship has officially kicked off in Accra with a spectacular opening ceremony on Sunday. The event, scheduled from August 15th to 22nd at the Ga Mashie sports hall, brings together young athletes from across 13 African countries to compete and showcase their talents.
In his opening speech, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, warmly welcomed participants, officials, and guests to Ghana. He expressed gratitude to the Weightlifting Federation of Africa, the Ministry of Sports, and other partners for their support.
Shaib emphasized that the championship is not only a platform for competition but also a stage for inspiration, cultural exchange, friendship, and solidarity. He urged young athletes to compete with courage, fairness, and passion, noting that every lift contributes to their personal journey and the future of African weightlifting.
The president assured that Ghana is committed to hosting a memorable and successful championship, providing an enjoyable experience for all participants.
The president of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Richard Akpokavie emphasized the power of sports in bringing together young people and thanked the Weightlifting Federation of Africa for hosting the championships in Ghana. He urged young athletes to take advantage of the opportunity, give their best, and embody the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship.
“Give of your best, excellent results, respect those you are competing with and make friends so that when you go home you’ll be able to share what you learned from your friends with other people.” He stated.
The brief but colorful opening ceremony was attended by top dignitaries including traditional leaders, sports leaders, government appointees, and among others.
Competition begins today, Monday at the Ga Mashie sports hall inside the Bukom sports arena.
