The Ghana Hotels Association (GHA) Greater Accra Region, in collaboration with Orangeplus Media & Events, has launched the 2025 International Housekeeping Week celebration at the Lancaster Hotel in Accra. 

The event which brought together over 100 housekeepers from various hotels across the region to discuss key issues affecting the industry, also highlighted the challenges faced by housekeepers, including lack of long-term plans and inadequate training. 

Speaking at the launch, GHA President Mr. Edward Ackah-Nyamike Jnr emphasized the need for structured salaries and professional growth in the sector.

“Hotel workers make the hotels tick. Without them, what can we do?” he said, highlighting the crucial role housekeepers play in hotel operations. 

Mr. Ackah-Nyamike announced that the Association will begin addressing staffing structures in the industry, aiming to develop a unified blueprint for all hotel staff.

A panel discussion on “Housekeeping Conversations” focused on Training & Skills Development, Team Building, and Leadership in Housekeeping. Industry professionals stressed the importance of repositioning housekeeping as a career choice, rather than temporary work. 

Mr. Ackah-Nyamike emphasized that training is expensive but necessary to improve industry standards, seeking support from the Tourism Development Fund for affordable training options.

Chairperson of the Greater Accra branch, Madam Clare Banoeng-Yakubo reiterated that the association would continue to champion the agenda of its staff across the region. She indicated plans of empowering the various hotels to ensure continuous and relevant services.

The GHA aims to elevate all hotels to a satisfactory level, promoting professionalism and excellence in the hospitality sector.
