NGO aims to elevate Ghanaian and African music through performances and education.

Accra witnessed the official launch of the Ghana Jazz Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and elevating Ghanaian jazz artistes. The foundation, established by a collaboration of jazz enthusiasts and musicians, aims to provide a fresh approach to mobilizing resources for the promotion of live music in Ghana.

The launch took place during the maiden edition of the “Jazz in January” festival at the +233 Jazz Bar & Grill, which spanned from January 4 to 7. The festival featured performances and activities aimed at celebrating and showcasing the richness of jazz music.

Dr. Adrian Oddoye, the President of the Ghana Jazz Foundation, highlighted the organization’s objectives, including the promotion of jazz musicians, the elevation of Ghanaian and African music, and the enhancement of music literacy through performances and educational programs.

He emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to addressing the existing talent in Ghana, proposing initiatives such as mentorship programs, pairing proficient jazz musicians with aspiring talents, and introducing online music education courses.

Dr. Oddoye noted that despite the immense talent in Ghana, there is room for improvement in music literacy, and the foundation seeks to empower local musicians through its various initiatives.

Bessa Simons, the President of the Musician’s Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), expressed support for the vision of the Ghana Jazz Foundation, emphasizing the alignment of its objectives with MUSIGA’s mission to enhance music knowledge and welfare support for artists.

Simons stressed the importance of quality venues and fair treatment of musicians, advocating for proper compensation for their hard work. He encouraged musicians to not only play but also read music, as it enhances their skills and opens up new opportunities.

The launch of the Ghana Jazz Foundation signifies a concerted effort to celebrate, support, and elevate jazz music within the Ghanaian and African music landscape.
