Ghana has officially launched its 5G network, starting with initial coverage in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi. This milestone, part of the government’s commitment to enhance digital connectivity, was inaugurated at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, with President Nana Akufo-Addo and Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful leading the event. Owusu-Ekuful described 5G as a transformative leap for productivity and connectivity, with residents in these cities already experiencing its benefits as operators activate the service.
The rollout marks the start of a multi-phase expansion to cover urban areas by late 2024 and rural regions by 2026. Built by Next Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a consortium backed by seven private firms, the 5G infrastructure will be open to all network providers, aiming to promote fair and widespread service. The government has also committed to ensuring affordability, collaborating with telecom providers to offer budget-friendly data packages for businesses, students, and lower-income households.
President Akufo-Addo was lauded for his role in this digital leap, which the government anticipates will stimulate advancements across agriculture, healthcare, and education, and support the creation of smart cities and IoT innovations.
