Physiotherapist Urges Action on Widespread Back Pain Issue

More than 70% of Ghanaian adults suffer from lower back pain, a physiotherapist revealed at a University of Ghana lecture on June 26, 2025. Professor Ajediran Idowu Bello called the issue a major public health concern, stressing the need for better policies to tackle musculoskeletal disorders that limit movement and work.

The lecture, titled “Beyond Movement: Addressing Musculoskeletal Disorders as a Public Health Imperative,” highlighted that 13.8% of Ghanaians over 50 also face knee osteoarthritis. These conditions cause pain, reduce productivity, and strain healthcare systems, yet they are often ignored, Quartey noted, urging action to improve treatment access.

Lower back pain is linked to poor posture, heavy manual work, and aging, common in Ghana’s farming and urban communities. Quartey suggested workplace changes, like ergonomic tools, and public awareness campaigns to teach better movement habits. He also pushed for more physiotherapy centers to help those affected.

The high rate of back pain affects Ghana’s economy, as many workers take time off or struggle with daily tasks. Quartey called on the government to fund research and training for health workers to address the crisis. Simple steps like regular exercise could also reduce risks, he added.

As Ghana grapples with this health challenge, experts hope for stronger policies to ease the burden. With most adults affected, the call for action grows louder to improve lives and keep the workforce healthy and active.
