Inquiry Launched into Ghana Military’s Missing Ammunition and Financial Scandal

Tensions are rising within Ghana’s military as Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Oppong-Peprah, initiates a high-level inquiry into missing ammunition, with a particular focus on Lt. Gen. Onwona, former ADC to ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The situation has been further complicated by reports of financial irregularities linked to a $250,000 military procurement deal. The funds, allocated for the supply of military uniforms, reportedly never reached the intended commercial bank account, despite being disbursed by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

According to insider sources, Prince Daron Obasa, who secured a facility from a Nigerian bank with a guarantee from the Ghana Army for the uniform procurement, passed away before the Army could fulfill its financial obligations. The Nigerian bank has since filed a lawsuit against the Ghana Army over the unpaid amount.

Adding to the controversy, Col. Michael Nkrumah, the then Service Financial Controller, allegedly facilitated the cash transaction without the knowledge or authorization of Gen. Oppong-Peprah. Despite the allegations, Col. Nkrumah has not been prosecuted. Instead, he has been promoted to Commanding Officer of the Forces Pay Regiment.

Sources claim that Col. Nkrumah disclosed certain details of the $250,000 transaction to former heads of the GAF, but no disciplinary action has been taken so far.

As the inquiry proceeds, questions are mounting regarding transparency and accountability in military procurement processes, raising concerns about the broader implications for Ghana’s national security.
