Promising Results from Iron Ore Explorations in the Oti Region

Ghana’s initiative to diversify its mineral resource base has gained significant momentum with the discovery of potentially lucrative iron ore deposits in the Oti Region. Initial exploration, undertaken by the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) and Africa Exploration and Minerals Group (AEMG), in the Gyamurume community of the Kadjebi District, reveals promising results. The early findings indicate the ore deposits could be among the finest in West Africa, with iron oxide content reaching up to 82 percent.

The initial results have already sparked investor interest, although GIISDEC emphasises the importance of further data validation before any agreements are pursued. According to Mr Darteh from GIISDEC, if subsequent analyses confirm the preliminary data, the quality of the ore could surpass existing operations across Africa, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s mineral diversification efforts.

The exploration has involved remote sensing and geophysical surveys, with drilling commencing in mid-2024. So far, eight out of 30 planned drill holes have been completed. The comprehensive programme spans 15 lines over a 2,500-metre stretch, with a full resource estimate expected by September 2025. AEMG’s chief geologist, Franklin Mace, noted the consistent encounter of banded iron formations, alongside unexpected serpentinite rock findings, indicating potential nickel deposits.

GIISDEC plans to leverage the final data to attract strategic investments aimed at establishing a domestic iron and steel industry. This move is projected to reduce Ghana’s dependence on gold and cocoa exports, with an estimated 1.7 billion tonnes of iron ore reserves already identified. The project is seen as a transformative step towards industrialisation and economic diversification, with local leaders expressing keen support for its potential to create employment and development.

Despite the challenges posed by the rugged terrain, the project progresses with collaborations from local and international partners. If successful, this iron ore initiative could pave the way for a new industrial sector in Ghana, marking a pivotal shift in the country’s economic landscape.
