The GPHA condemns the clash between its security personnel and GIS officers at Tema port, emphasizing commitment to safety.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has strongly criticized the recent altercation that erupted at the Tema port, underscoring its commitment to the safety and security of all stakeholders.

The incident, which unfolded on Monday, May 13, involved a clash between GPHA security personnel and officers from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) stationed at the port.

According to reports, the confrontation stemmed from a disagreement during routine vessel checks on the MSC DYMPHNA, docked at the Tema Port.

Allegedly, GPHA security members stationed at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) attempted to apprehend two GIS officers following the disagreement.

Tensions escalated when a GIS inspector objected to the security personnel’s attempt to conduct body searches on the officers, particularly by male security personnel, citing procedural concerns.

The GPHA has asserted that such actions contravene the Standard Operating Procedures outlined by the International Ships and Port Facility Security (ISIPS).

In a press statement, the GPHA acknowledged the incident but emphasized that it could have been managed more effectively to prevent any misunderstanding.
