Contrary to swirling rumors of AfroNation’s potential move to neighboring Nigeria, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Awal Mohammed, has reaffirmed Ghana’s position as a host for the popular arts and culture festival. Dr. Mohammed, speaking at an editors’ forum in Accra on August 14, 2023, dismissed claims that the festival had been “taken away” from Ghana and assured that discussions were ongoing to meet the festival’s demands and conditions.
Addressing questions about the possibility of losing the festival, Dr. Mohammed confidently stated, “It’s not been taken yet,” revealing recent talks to explore collaboration with the organizers. In a seemingly optimistic tone, he emphasized the existence of backup options in case of any unforeseen developments. When asked about the likelihood of another AfroNation festival in Ghana, Dr. Mohammed expressed confidence, stating, “Most likely, very likely,” with plans potentially spanning the next three years.
The inaugural AfroNation Ghana concert, which took place in December 2019 as part of the Year of Return initiative, marked a significant milestone. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, the festival made a successful return in December 2022. Although other countries are eager to host the festival, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority highlighted Ghana’s strong bid to retain the event.
AfroNation, founded by Adesegun Adeosun (SMADE) and Obi Asika, has become an internationally renowned celebration of music, culture, and arts. Despite speculations about its future location, Ghana remains steadfast in its commitment to continuing the festival’s legacy on its shores.
