Unjustified Rent Hikes Burdening Citizens, Says FABAG Chairman
John Awuni, Chairman of the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana (FABAG), has urged a national discussion on Ghana’s soaring rental costs, calling the increases unreasonable and unjustified. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on April 10, 2025, Awuni compared Ghana’s rental system to structured models in countries like the U.S., where rent prices remain stable for years.
In Ghana, landlords often impose steep hikes when leases expire—a practice Awuni criticized as exploitative. “A 2-bedroom apartment costing GH₵2,000 can jump to GH₵3,000 without justification,” he said. He also highlighted the role of foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians, in driving up demand and prices.
Awuni called for government intervention, stressing that unchecked rent increases are worsening living conditions for many Ghanaians. “This must be a national conversation,” he insisted.
