Ghana School Feeding Programme resumes as government clears arrears

The Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) has recommenced operations, providing daily hot, nutritious meals to public basic school pupils nationwide as the 2025 academic year begins. In a press release on January 13, 2025, the GSFP urged caterers across Ghana’s 16 regions to resume meal services following school reopenings on January 8.

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) announced plans for a new caterer procurement process aimed at enhancing the programme’s efficiency and sustainability. The initiative, under the new administration, is set to support over four million children in underserved communities.

Significant strides have been made in addressing financial arrears owed to caterers. Payments for the third term of the 2023/2024 academic year have been fully cleared. Additionally, 40 of 71 outstanding cooking days from the first term of 2024/2025 have been paid, with the remaining payments scheduled for completion soon.

The GSFP has called on community stakeholders and opinion leaders to collaborate in ensuring that caterers can deliver meals without disruption, emphasizing the programme’s importance in improving children’s nutrition and school attendance.
