The Scrabble Association of Ghana, SCAG, led by Captain Haruna Adamu, has secured the rights to host the 2025 World Scrabble Championship, edging out Thailand in the bidding process. This milestone event will take place from November 7 to 16, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Ghana.

The championship will comprise two main events: the World Team Scrabble Championship (WTSC) from November 7 to 10, and the World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) from November 12 to 16.

The WTSC will bring together teams of five players from 16 countries, including the United States and Canada, to compete for national glory. The WESPAC championship will feature over 600 participants from 30 countries, making it a truly global gathering of Scrabble enthusiasts. This will be the first time Ghana hosts the championship and only the second time in West Africa.

Captain Haruna Adamu expressed his excitement about hosting the event, stating, “We are thrilled to bring the world of Scrabble to Ghana, and we’re committed to making it a memorable experience for all participants.” He emphasized that interactions with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority, have begun to ensure the event’s success.

On the economic benefits of hosting the championship, Captain Adamu noted, “This event will not only showcase Ghana’s hospitality but also provide a significant boost to our economy through tourism and infrastructure development.” He added, “We’re expecting a significant influx of visitors, which will stimulate local businesses and create opportunities for economic growth.”

The Scrabble Association of Ghana has planned various side events and activities to complement the championship, including a Last Chance Qualifier on November 11. The championship will be governed by internationally recognized rules, and a ratings system will be used to determine the winners.

As Ghana prepares to host the world’s top Scrabble players, the excitement is palpable. With its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality, Ghana is poised to make the 2025 World Scrabble Championship an unforgettable experience for all participants.
