Rising Water Levels Prompt GWCL Action to Prevent Potential Dam Collapse.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced its plans to begin the spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam. In a letter dated March 7, 2024, GWCL stated that the water level is gradually rising due to the onset of the rains.

According to GWCL, failure to spill the dam could endanger lives and properties, potentially leading to a collapse. While the company did not specify the exact date when the exercise will begin, it noted that the spilling process would start at a low rate to minimize downstream impact.

The rate of spillage will be determined by the incoming flow of water into the dam, and the spillage will continue as long as the water level continues to rise. GWCL expressed regret for any inconveniences that may arise as a result of the spillage.
