Ghanaian students studying in the UK on government scholarships face possible deportation after their student visas were canceled due to unpaid tuition fees. According to a report by Channel 1 News, many of these students attend the University of Birmingham and have been unable to pay their fees as the government has failed to remit funds for the scholarships.
The affected students have been given a deadline of November 9, 2024, by the UK Visa and Immigration Office to either leave the UK or risk further sanctions, including detention and prosecution. The letter sent to the students warned that failure to comply would result in the immediate termination of their student visas.
Despite numerous attempts to raise awareness of the issue, the students say the government has not responded to their financial difficulties. Some students have faced eviction from their hostels, while others have received withdrawal letters from their universities. In some cases, students have even had their visa status revoked.
Although the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat recently released $50 million to cover outstanding fees, students claim the funds are insufficient to resolve the issue. The students have urged the government to release additional funds to prevent deportation and ensure they can complete their studies.
