The Black Starlets of Ghana dominated the WAFU U17 match opener against Côte D’Ivoire, winning 5-1 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on May 15, 2024.

Ghana started strong, creating chances from the beginning. Côte D’Ivoire made the first attempt, but Michael Armah, Ghana’s goalkeeper, saved it in the early minutes. GodFred Sarpong was flagged offside in the 18th minute after a well-worked pass. Côte D’Ivoire earned a free kick in front of Ghana’s penalty box in the 20th minute, but it was ruled offside.

Joseph Narbi opened the scoring for Ghana in the 26th minute, assisted by Abdulai Nortey. Michael Armah made another crucial save in the 38th minute. Joseph Narbi doubled Ghana’s lead in the 41st minute with a long-range shot after a corner kick clearance. Côte D’Ivoire’s Moussa Kone received a yellow card in the 45th minute for a foul on Mark Kagawa Mensah. The first half ended with Ghana leading 2-0.

In the second half, Ghana missed an opportunity in the 46th minute, but Godfred Sarpong added the third goal after a quick through pass in the 48th minute. Côte D’Ivoire registered a consolation goal in the 52nd minute, and Harve Gbafa of Ghana received a yellow card in the 53rd minute for handling the ball. 

However, Harve Gbafa made up for it by scoring another clean goal for Ghana after a beautifully converted corner kick by Benjamin Tsivanyo. Ghana controlled the game, utilizing both wings effectively.

In added time, Mark Kagawa Mensah cemented Ghana’s 5-1 victory with a last-minute long-range strike.

The Black Starlets of Ghana emerged victorious, showcasing their skill and determination throughout the match.

Black Starlet Joseph Narbi took home the man of the match award for his impressive performances.
