Ghana’s Education Sector Faces Crisis as Teachers Demand Action

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a stern warning of a potential nationwide strike by Wednesday, April 30, 2025. This decision comes in response to the unresolved issue of delayed promotions affecting over a thousand educators across the country.

In an interview with 3news.com, GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, expressed the association’s frustration over the Public Services Commission’s inaction regarding pending promotions. Efforts to resolve the matter with Ghana Education Service and the commission have so far been unsuccessful.

Musah highlighted that while some senior officers have received promotions, many junior teachers remain in uncertain positions, leading to growing tensions within the teaching community. “There is fire on the mountain,” Musah emphasized, urging the Ministry of Education to take immediate steps to prevent nationwide disruption in education.

The association’s demands have grown more urgent as the deadline approaches. They are calling on all stakeholders to engage in dialogue to avert a potential shutdown of schools across the nation. “The situation is critical, and it’s time for swift action,” Musah warned.

As the deadline looms, the pressure for a resolution mounts. The education sector’s stability hangs in the balance, with the future of thousands of students at stake if steps are not taken to address the teachers’ grievances. The nation awaits the outcome, hoping for a quick and fair resolution.
