The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Commonwealth Sports, Ghana (CSG), Richard Akpokavie Esq., opened the New Year with a heartfelt message to the nation’s sporting family.
He reflected on 2025 as a year of remarkable progress, citing the dedication of national federations, coaches, athletes and support staff who together raised Ghana’s profile on the international stage. From the successes at the inaugural Africa School Games to the medals earned at the African Youth Games, the president praised the indomitable spirit that defines Ghanaian sport.
He highlighted the GOC’s steadfast support for its member federations throughout 2025, including funding for competitions, payment of affiliation fees and the provision of technical guidance. These efforts, he said, have built a stronger operational foundation and resilience within the sports ecosystem, preparing the ground for the next phase of development.
Looking forward, the president announced the imminent launch of the GOC’s new four‑year Strategy Plan, a comprehensive roadmap aimed at professionalising structures, improving governance and ensuring sustainable success. The plan places special emphasis on athlete development and women’s empowerment, reaffirming the belief that athletes are the heart of the Olympic movement and deserve every resource to thrive both on and off the field.
With the strategy set to take effect, the GOC is gearing up for major milestones in 2026, including the Youth Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. The president expressed confidence that the seeds planted in 2025 and the forthcoming plan will soon bear visible fruit, propelling Ghana to become a leading sporting powerhouse in Africa and beyond.
In closing, the president extended gratitude to the Ministry of Sports & Recreation, the GOC Board, the Minister, and the Ghanaian media for their collaboration and counsel. He wished all a safe, prosperous and successful New Year, urging Team Ghana to shine brighter than ever before.
