Transport Fares Drop 15% Effective May 25, Says GPRTU
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 25, 2025, following a meeting with the Minister of Transport. Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in an interview with Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight, citing an 18% drop in fuel prices as a key driver.
Moro explained that the GPRTU traditionally applies one-third of fuel price reductions to fares but opted for a 15% cut despite unchanged costs for lubricants, permits, taxes, and DVLA fees. “This is our contribution towards resetting Ghana,” he stated, expressing hope that spare parts dealers might also lower prices to further ease operator costs.
To ensure compliance, Moro urged passengers to report non-compliant drivers to the police, emphasizing that no violence should occur. “The public has been cheated, so they should hand them over to the police,” he said. The GPRTU plans to discipline members who fail to adhere, aiming to eliminate “bad nuts” from the system.
The decision responds to public and stakeholder calls for fare reductions amid falling fuel prices, currently at ¢14.99 for petrol and ¢15.49 for diesel. Earlier GPRTU statements indicated fares would only drop if fuel reached ¢12 per litre, suggesting this move reflects broader economic considerations and government engagement.
