As part of the celebrations for the International Housekeeping Week, the Greater Accra Hotels Association, under the auspices of the Ghana Hotels Association, has launched an initiative aimed at recognizing hardworking housekeepers and acknowledging the crucial role they play in maintaining the reputation and cleanliness of their hotels.

The initiative, also targeted at promoting the hotel industry through sustainable housekeeping, was launched on the theme “Housekeeping: Everything We Touch, Turns Awesome” on Monday, 15th September 2025, at the Lancaster Hotel.

The chairperson of the Greater Accra Hotels Association, Madam Clare Banoung Yakoubu, emphasized the decision by the hotel industry to shine a spotlight on the hardworking housekeepers who keep hotels clean and comfortable for guests. She stated, “Their work is not seen, but their work is recognized. Because when you enter a hotel, it is the cleanliness of the environment that will tell you that you have a good team or not.” “We want to recognize them in that sense. Most of the time, the front desk people are seen. Those in the kitchen, they are seen. Those in the other security scene, bar, restaurant. But the housekeepers, we don’t see them. So we do this to recognize their hard work.”

She stressed that the industry is showing appreciation for housekeepers through awards, gifts, and tokens of gratitude. “We award them sometimes. We give them gifts or something, a token just to show that we appreciate their work,” she said.

The President of the Ghana Hotels Association, Dr. Edward Ackah-Nyamike Jnr, noted that the association will make it a priority to discuss remuneration, appreciation, and recognition for housekeepers, who play a vital role in ensuring client satisfaction. “We need to work for our members. We need to start talking about some of these things, especially with remuneration for workers, appreciation, and even recognition,” he said.

Mr. Ackah-Nyamike Jnr, announced that the Association will begin addressing staffing structures in the industry. He emphasized the importance of developing a unified blueprint for all hotel staff, starting with housekeepers, to promote structured salaries and professional growth across the sector.

An in-depth conversation by housekeeping experts was also held to sensitize and educate the various hotels on the sustainability of the industry. The industry professionals discussed three topical and highly relevant areas: Training & Skills Development, Team Building, and Leadership in Housekeeping.

The brief event attracted huge patronage from various hotels, including budget and one to five-star hotels, as well as patrons and others.
