The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has attributed the ongoing power outages in various parts of the country to a shortage in gas supply, which has disrupted electricity transmission. Amid concerns of potential dumsor, GRIDCo clarified that the irregular power supply is a result of gas supply challenges that have hindered power generation from thermal plants.

Dzifa Bampoh, GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications Manager, stated that the shortages are linked to “commercial challenges” with gas suppliers, involving unresolved agreements, payment delays, and negotiations. She explained that these bottlenecks have directly reduced generation capacity, which has impacted GRIDCo’s ability to transmit adequate power to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

“Currently, GRIDCo is aware of commercial challenges with gas supply,” Bampoh explained. “This means agreements, payments, and negotiations need to be resolved with gas suppliers to stabilize generation capacity. Until then, we cannot provide the full power supply that ECG needs to operate effectively across the country.”

Bampoh emphasized that the recent outages are not related to the shutdown of Sunon Asogli Power Limited due to ECG’s debt, and clarified that even if the Asogli plant were operational, it would be unable to generate power without sufficient gas supply.

The GRIDCo spokesperson assured the public that the situation is temporary and expected to stabilize once the government addresses the commercial issues with gas suppliers, allowing for the resumption of consistent power generation and transmission.
