Maame Efua Houadjeto, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has been appointed chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship. 

The event, hosted by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, is scheduled to take place in Accra from April 29 to May 3, 2026.

The LOC, comprising seven members, was sworn in by the Minister of Sports and Recreation on January 20, 2026. Other members include Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, ACI Gordon Saah, Mr. Edwin Amankwah, Mr. Gideon Hammond, Jessica Kwarteng, and Andre Ackah.

The Africa Armwrestling Championship is expected to attract top athletes from across the continent, showcasing Ghana’s capabilities in hosting international sporting events.

As LOC chairperson, Maame Efua Houadjeto brings her expertise in event management and tourism to ensure the championship’s success. Her appointment underscores the Ghana Tourism Authority’s commitment to promoting sports tourism in Ghana.

In a speech read on her behalf, she expressed gratitude for the appointment, acknowledging it as a responsibility to promote sports tourism in Ghana. 

Houadjeto believes that sports and tourism are natural allies, stating that major sporting events stimulate travel, energise local economies, create jobs, and project the image of the host nation to the world, and committed to delivering a championship that meets international standards.

“Ghana has demonstrated this capacity consistently, and this championship presents yet another opportunity to showcase our hospitality, organisational competence, and readiness to host world-class sporting events”. The speech read.

She emphasized that platforms such as this championship send a powerful message to the youth—that talent, when matched with discipline, opportunity, and the right support systems, can reach the global stage.
