Popular Ghanaian hiplife musician Guru, officially known as Maradona Yeboah Adjei, has been elected as the Student Representative Council (SRC) President of the University of Ghana. Guru, along with his running mate Jeffrey Adu-Yeboah, secured 50.7% of the vote, defeating his closest rival, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, who received 35.6%. Guru’s election victory reflects his popularity and influence on campus.

Despite his eventual success, Guru’s candidacy was initially met with controversy when he was disqualified from the race due to a residency status issue. The SRC Electoral Commission had cited Article 30 of the SRC constitution, which mandates that only campus residents are eligible to contest. However, Guru’s legal team successfully appealed the decision, and the Appeals Board ruled unanimously to reinstate him.

Although there was a last-minute attempt to halt the election through an injunction filed in court, the University of Ghana proceeded with the election as planned. Guru’s victory marks a significant moment for both the University and his career, as he takes on the responsibility of leading the SRC.

This win follows a contentious election process, but Guru’s perseverance has paid off, and his supporters are hopeful that his leadership will bring positive changes to the student community.
