$900M to be pledged towards female entrepreneurs
The U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has unveiled the Women in the Sustainable Economy Initiative (WISE), a global effort to empower women in pivotal sectors such as clean energy, fisheries, and environmental conservation. As part of this initiative, Harris has announced a substantial commitment of $900 million from governments, companies, and civil society organizations, showcasing a collective dedication to advancing gender equality and promoting women’s participation in the sustainable economy.
Ghana, among the nations set to benefit from this initiative, has received a noteworthy commitment from Canada, amounting to $12.52 million through 2025. This funding is earmarked for projects supporting enterprises owned and led by women in Ghana, emphasizing the significance of women’s economic empowerment in the country. Amazon’s commitment to invest $50 million in “climate tech” companies led by women further highlights the potential positive impact on Ghana’s environmental and economic landscape.
The Women in the Sustainable Economy Initiative recognizes the intrinsic link between women’s economic opportunities and their ability to control, access, and utilize resources such as land, energy, and water. As Ghana stands to benefit from these pledges, the initiative not only promotes women’s economic security but also contributes to addressing the root causes and effects of climate change. By supporting women’s work and leadership in sectors critical to the planet’s future, the initiative aligns with Ghana’s sustainable development goals and underscores the importance of inclusive and environmentally conscious economic prosperity.
