A sudden heavy downpour left hundreds of commuters stranded at the Airport Roundabout in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, as severe flooding overwhelmed the area’s drainage system. The roughly 30-minute rain caused the Pelele River to overflow, making roads impassable and stranding vehicles.

OTEC News Reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng, who reported live from the scene, described the gridlock as drivers from surrounding areas like Sofoline, Kenyasi, Tech, and Asawase were forced to find alternative routes. Residents voiced frustration, blaming inadequate drainage and poor waste management for the recurring floods and calling on authorities to implement long-term solutions.

“It’s been years of this flooding issue; the small drains can’t handle the water,” one resident shared. Local authorities, particularly the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, have been urged to take swift action to prevent further incidents and protect commuter safety.
