Samuel George Addresses Viral Crash Images
Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George revealed on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show that he nearly shut down Ghana’s internet following the August 6 military helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region, which killed eight, including two cabinet ministers.
Gory images of the crash, particularly circulating on WhatsApp, prompted George to consider an internet blackout to protect victims’ families from further trauma. Concerned for the mental health of children and spouses, he aimed to control the spread of distressing visuals after the tragedy.
George ultimately rejected the shutdown, citing its broader consequences, and pursued alternative measures to manage the situation. The decision followed consultations with state officials, balancing public sensitivity with the need to maintain communication access across Ghana’s 17 million internet users.
The Z9 helicopter crash, en route to a mining program in Obuasi, triggered a national outcry, with missing aircraft parts complicating investigations. The minister’s response highlights challenges in regulating private platforms like WhatsApp, which handles 65% of Ghana’s messaging traffic.
George urged responsible sharing of information, as the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council offers rewards for returning crash site items by August 11. The incident underscores ongoing efforts to balance digital freedom with public welfare during crises.
