3.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Hollywood During Oscars Afterparty

A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck North Hollywood late Sunday night, just as some of the world’s biggest stars were celebrating after the Oscars 2025 at the Dolby Theatre.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake’s epicenter was in North Hollywood, just miles away from the Vanity Fair afterparty, a popular gathering for A-list celebrities.

Impact of the Earthquake

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the tremor, which occurred shortly after 10:00 PM local time. However, residents and event attendees described experiencing a sudden jolt, with some people screaming as high-rise buildings wobbled.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed that while the earthquake was widely felt across downtown Los Angeles, the agency would not enter Earthquake Mode, as the tremor was not strong enough to warrant emergency assessments.

Recent Earthquake Activity in Southern California

This earthquake is among 40 minor quakes that have hit Southern California since the start of March, most of which were below magnitude 1 and not felt by residents.

Other recent notable earthquakes in the region include:

  • A 3.7 magnitude quake in Malibu last month.
  • A 7.0 magnitude earthquake in northern California in December, which triggered a short tsunami alert.

Eyewitness Reactions

Many in Hollywood were caught off guard by the sudden tremor. The BBC’s Emma Vardy, covering the Oscars, described how her rhinestone chandelier earrings wobbled as she realized the high-rise building she was in was shaking.

“Feeling a building of that size move around like jelly is quite an experience,” she remarked.

One Hollywood resident expressed disbelief that the quake was only magnitude 3.9, saying, “I felt that in my bones!”

Despite the momentary scare, the celebrations continued, with no major disruptions reported at the Oscars afterparties.
