Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Mining in Tilli Forest
Security forces in the Upper East Region have arrested 66 illegal miners in a special operation aimed at stopping illegal mining activities in the Tilli Forest Reserve. The operation, which took place on Tuesday, March 4, 2024, resulted in the arrest of two Burkinabes, 26 Togolese, and 38 Ghanaians.
Impact on Tilli Forest Ecosystem
The Tilli Forest Reserve is one of the largest in the region, home to diverse wildlife species, including elephants and other organisms that depend on the ecosystem for survival. However, illegal mining has been rapidly degrading the forest, threatening both biodiversity and natural resources.

Motivation Behind the Crackdown
Following the arrests, Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, revealed that the operation was prompted by a call from the Paramount Chief of Sakote, who urged authorities to take action against illegal mining in the area.
The suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing to identify key perpetrators and dismantle illegal mining networks in the region.
Authorities have vowed to intensify enforcement efforts to protect Ghana’s forests and water bodies from the devastating effects of illegal mining (galamsey).
