Operation highlights Ghana’s ongoing fight against cross-border smuggling

The Bunkprugu Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intercepted twenty-five bags of cocoa beans being smuggled from Kauk-Jago, a border community, into neighboring Togo. The operation, which took place around 10:00 PM, followed a credible tip-off that led officers to the location. This success marks another step in the GIS’s commitment to strengthening border security and protecting Ghana’s trade.

According to an official statement released by the Bunkprugu Sector Command, the Officer in Charge (OIC) and the Operations Commander quickly mobilized a special team of eight officers to carry out an ambush at Kauk. During the operation, immigration officers seized two unregistered ‘motor kings’ — locally made tricycles — that were transporting the cocoa beans. This quick and strategic action helped prevent the goods from crossing into Togo.

The confiscated cocoa beans have since been handed over to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in Bunkprugu for further processing and investigation. Meanwhile, the suspects involved in the smuggling operation have been arrested and are currently in custody. Authorities are now questioning them to gain insights into the broader smuggling network operating in the area.

This operation reflects the Ghana Immigration Service’s broader efforts to tighten security in the North East Region. By intercepting smuggled goods and investigating cross-border criminal networks, law enforcement agencies are working to safeguard the country’s economic interests and maintain legal trade flows. Officials are optimistic that such efforts will deter future illegal activities along Ghana’s borders.

The GIS is encouraging the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Through cooperation between citizens and law enforcement, the country aims to tackle smuggling and related crimes effectively, ensuring stronger national security and economic stability.
