Photography Exhibition Highlights Ghanaian Faces, African Culture, and Heritage

Mr. Thomas Fynn, a photographer and Executive Director of FYNNexhibits, has called on various entities in Ghana to invest in photography as a means to boost the country’s tourism industry. Speaking at the opening of the “Spirit Possession” photographic exhibition in Accra, Mr. Fynn emphasized the role of photography in projecting Ghana’s rich culture and heritage to the world. He stressed, “You can’t market your country without photography,” highlighting the powerful impact of visual storytelling.

The exhibition, organized by Mr. Fynn in collaboration with photographer Tom Lamb and the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), features themes ranging from rites of passage and traditional cultural festivals to ecotourism and socio-political history. Mr. Fynn expressed concern over the lack of understanding and appreciation for photography in Ghana, especially in terms of sponsorship for exhibitions. He encouraged young people to pursue photography as a profession and to leverage digital technology to enhance their work.

Ms. Judith Kelly, Senior Corporate Affairs Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, highlighted the importance of photography in storytelling and promoting Ghana as a preferred tourist destination. She emphasized that the exhibition serves as a powerful tool for showcasing Ghana’s culture and inviting tourists to explore its shores. Mr. William Kojo Krakani, Deputy Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, emphasized the importance of promoting Ghana’s culture at the grassroots level, stating that preserving local culture would enhance tourism offerings.

Nii Ayikwei Kakalor I, delivering a message on behalf of Gbese Mantse Dr. Nii Ayi Bonte II, expressed hope that the exhibition would help project Ghana’s rich culture to the international community. He emphasized the need to preserve local cultures to prevent them from becoming extinct and to offer unique experiences to tourists. The exhibition, held at the CLOGSAG National Secretariat in Accra, runs from April 22 to April 26, showcasing the beauty and diversity of Ghanaian culture and heritage through photography.
