Tel Aviv Sees Massive Hostage Square Rally
On August 17, 2025, hundreds of thousands rallied across Israel, with the largest gathering at Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, demanding a ceasefire and the release of 20 hostages held by Hamas. A national strike closed roads and offices, with 38 arrests reported during clashes.
The protests, led by the Hostages and Missing Families Forum and Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan, criticized Israel’s plan to occupy Gaza City, fearing it endangers hostages. The war cabinet’s decision, condemned by the UN, has displaced 1.9 million people in Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister Bezalel Smotrich denounced the protests, claiming they strengthen Hamas and delay hostage releases. Hamas reported 40 deaths from Israeli strikes on Saturday, with Gaza’s health ministry citing 61,000 Palestinian fatalities since October 2023.
Zangauker, referencing a recent video of her son, called the war “pointless” and demanded a deal. Israel plans to displace Gaza City’s 1 million residents to southern camps, resuming tent supplies via Cogat, amid warnings of famine and malnutrition.
The conflict, sparked by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack killing 1,200 and abducting 251, continues to fuel tensions. The UN reports widespread malnutrition, with no clear timeline for Israel’s Gaza City operation, escalating the humanitarian crisis.
