Johnson & Johnson and the University of Ghana Launch Mental Health Initiative
Johnson & Johnson Middle East FZ-LLC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Ghana to improve mental health care access for its community. The agreement, formalized on May 26, 2025, at the University’s New Council Chamber, addresses Ghana’s mental health crisis, where over 98% of those needing treatment lack access.
Emmanuel Antwi, Country Manager of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine in Ghana, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to reduce stigma and enhance care. The partnership introduces the Resilient Minds Future Leaders Program, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and education about conditions like schizophrenia.

The initiative includes awareness campaigns, capacity-building, and disease-awareness training for university staff involved in mental health services. It aims to create a stigma-free environment and strengthen mental health resources, aligning with Johnson & Johnson’s six-decade commitment to mental health globally.
Mental health is essential for the strength of our communities, requiring a collaborative approach to overcome barriers to access and ensure equality for all”

Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo highlighted the program’s role in fostering a supportive campus environment. She advocated for year-round mental health awareness to ensure comprehensive support for students and staff, addressing the 21% of adult Ghanaians facing psychological distress.
The collaboration is a strategic step toward building inclusive, community-based mental health systems, with the University of Ghana serving as a model for tackling Ghana’s mental health challenges through education and resource allocation.
