Devastating Fire Destroys Kantamanto Market in Accra
In the morning of January 2, 2025, a massive fire swept through Kantamanto Market in Accra, reducing stalls and goods to ashes. Traders, who invested their life savings into their businesses, were left devastated as they sifted through the remains of their livelihoods.
The blaze spread rapidly, fueled by flammable materials used to construct the stalls. Despite efforts by firefighters, much of the market was destroyed before the fire could be contained. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Vendors like Ama Mensah and Joshua Tetteh recounted losing everything, with some relying on loans to sustain their businesses. Food vendors and shop owners alike expressed desperation, calling for government assistance to rebuild.
For others, the aftermath has been a struggle for survival. Silas Oteng-Akenteng, a trader whose materials were destroyed, resorted to gathering scraps to sell as his primary source of income was wiped out.
“Kantamanto is more than a market; it’s our home,” said trader Joshua Tetteh. Many traders have vowed to rebuild their businesses and rise from the ashes, despite the enormous challenges ahead.
