Highway Robber Sentenced for Violent Kasoa-Winneba Robbery
An Accra High Court sentenced Mohammed Bello to 25 years in prison with hard labour on July 8, 2025, for his role in a violent robbery on the Kasoa-Winneba Highway. The attack, at Dabanyin near Gomoa Buduatta Junction on July 6, 2025, saw Bello and four accomplices rob drivers and passengers, injuring four with gunfire, as reported by CitiNewsroom.
Police arrested Bello, aged 28, during a swift response, recovering GH¢3,740, two Samsung smartphones, a Tecno Spark 20, an Itel keypad phone, an Itel power bank, a lady’s purse, five cigarettes, a wristwatch, a headset, a charger, and sandals identified by a victim. The other four suspects remain at large, with police intensifying their manhunt.
The robbery, around 1:00 a.m., targeted a Toyota Hiace minibus, with gunshots wounding four passengers now treated at Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital. The Central East Regional Police noted robbers shifted to Buduatta due to increased patrols at Potsin and Okyereko junctions, highlighting ongoing highway crime issues.
The court’s ruling follows a pattern of robberies in Gomoa East District, with earlier arrests of four suspects on June 1. The judge cited Bello’s role in the armed attack and lack of remorse as reasons for the harsh sentence. Police urged commuters to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities.
The sentencing has sparked calls for stronger security on the Kasoa-Winneba Highway, with posts on X praising the conviction but demanding action to catch the remaining suspects. The case underscores Ghana’s fight against rising highway robberies, as authorities work to restore safety.
