Kenyan Man Arrested Carrying Wife’s Mutilated Body in Backpack

Police in Kenya have arrested a 29-year-old man, John Kiama Wambua, who was found carrying the mutilated body of his wife in a backpack. The shocking discovery was made during a routine patrol in Huruma, east of Nairobi, just before dawn. According to Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the officers searched the bag and were horrified to find body parts belonging to Wambua’s 19-year-old wife, Joy Fridah Munani.

The DCI reported that Wambua appeared “unperturbed” by the discovery and confessed that the body parts belonged to his wife. He later led police to his home, where additional evidence was uncovered, including a knife, blood-soaked clothes, and more dismembered body parts hidden under a bed. Authorities described the act as “heinous” and confirmed that Wambua will be formally charged with murder in an upcoming court hearing.

This incident is part of a disturbing trend of rising femicide cases in Kenya. Between August and October 2024, Kenya’s National Police Service reported at least 97 murders of women. Protests against femicide have grown in recent months, with demonstrators in Nairobi met with teargas by police in December.

Kenya has also witnessed several high-profile femicide cases recently. In September 2024, Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei was murdered by her ex-partner after being set on fire at her home. Earlier in the year, police arrested a suspected serial killer, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, linked to the deaths of nine women whose bodies were discovered in a disused quarry. Khalusha escaped custody in August and remains at large.
