Violence Erupts Over Money at NPP Event in Ashanti Region

A KNUST student was stabbed during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Thank You Tour on April 29, 2025, in the Ashanti Region. The incident unfolded at the Bantama Pentecost Church in Kumasi, where the student, part of Unity Hall’s Jama group, was hired to energize the event.

The violence erupted after a wealthy associate of Kennedy Agyapong, a former NPP MP, gave money to the group. A gang of armed men, described as “land guards” in a white Toyota Hiace (AS 5943-23), allegedly seized the cash, sparking a confrontation. Gunshots were fired, and the student was critically injured, now under intensive care at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The incident prompted Agyapong to withdraw from the tour, citing safety concerns and the need for party unity. He also announced his intent to contest the NPP flagbearer position in 2028, highlighting ongoing internal party tensions after their 2024 election loss to the NDC.

Authorities are investigating, with the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, condemning the violence and urging the NPP to ensure peaceful events. This clash reflects a broader rise in political violence globally, often tied to partisan disputes, as noted in a 2023 Reuters report.
