Kwabena Amofa faces investigation over illegal mining in Asante Akyem Central

The Konongo Traditional Council in the Ashanti Region has handed over Mr. Kwabena Amofa, popularly known as Alhaji, to the police for questioning and possible prosecution over his alleged role in illegal mining activities (galamsey) in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality.

Mr. Amofa is believed to be a central figure in the rising spate of illegal mining operations in Konongo, which have wreaked havoc on local water bodies and farmlands, triggering widespread environmental concerns.

The Konongohene, Nana Dr. Ing. Awuah Abedimisa II, led the Traditional Council in taking action after Mr. Amofa was previously summoned and warned about his alleged involvement. During an earlier meeting, Amofa reportedly pleaded for clemency and pledged to cease all galamsey activities.

However, contrary to his promise, the Traditional Council later found that illegal mining in the area had intensified. This prompted the chief to convene a second meeting, where the council unanimously resolved to hand over Mr. Amofa to the Konongo District Police Command for formal investigation and potential legal action.

Local residents have praised the Council’s decisive action, viewing it as a firm step toward combating illegal mining and protecting the environment in the municipality. The move is expected to deter others involved in galamsey and restore a sense of accountability in the community.
