Global InfoAnalytics Director Questions GACL’s Backup Power Readiness
A power outage at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, disrupted airport operations, causing delays in both arrivals and departures. The incident occurred following a heavy downpour in Accra.
Airport Authorities Explain System Failure
In a statement, the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) clarified that while the backup power system activated as expected, an electrical system fault prevented power from reaching the main terminal. Power was eventually restored at 18:19hrs, but the delay caused significant inconveniences for passengers.
GACL apologized for the disruption, assuring travelers of its commitment to smooth airport operations.
Mussa Dankwah Questions Lack of Reliable Standby Power
The incident has raised concerns about the airport’s backup power system. Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, took to Facebook to question why KIA lacks a reliable alternative power source.
“So, the GACL does not have a standby alternative power source? Just at the roundabout, stood a plant room that was able to power the entire airport in 1998. What happened to it?” he wrote.
His concerns highlight the need for improved infrastructure to prevent future power-related disruptions at Ghana’s main international airport.
