Former President Supports National Day of Prayers Initiative

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor endorsed the proposal to observe July 1, Ghana’s Republic Day, as a National Day of Prayers and Thanksgiving during a courtesy visit by the planning committee to his Accra residence on May 30, 2025. He described the initiative as timely and meaningful for fostering national unity.

Kufuor highlighted the historical significance of July 1, 1960, when Ghana became a sovereign republic with its first president, fully independent from British oversight. He praised President John Mahama for recognizing the day as an occasion for prayer, thanksgiving, and reflection on Ghana’s progress.

The former president expressed hope that the day would encourage Ghanaians to seek divine guidance for inclusive prosperity and development. He emphasized unity, urging an end to ethnic, religious, and political divisions, and stressed that governance should prioritize humanity and fairness.

Kufuor noted that Ghana’s democratic process entrusts elected officials with citizens’ sovereignty, calling for empathetic leadership. The planning committee thanked him for his support, assuring an inclusive event with interfaith services and civic engagements across the country.

The National Day of Prayers and Thanksgiving, set to commemorate Ghana’s republican status, aims to reflect the nation’s diversity and democratic values, strengthening national cohesion through collective gratitude and aspiration for a prosperous future.
