Police Launch Probe After Targeted Attack
Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and Kadi Divisional Chief in Binduri, Abdul-Malik Azenbe, was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen at his Asawase residence near the F-Line Community Centre on July 22, 2025, at around 8:40 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported two assailants on a motorbike, one wielding an AK-47, opening fire before fleeing, per GhanaWeb.
Azenbe, enskinned as Kadi Naaba three months ago, was rushed to Manhyia District Hospital and later transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe visited the family, promising a thorough investigation to apprehend the culprits. Heavy security has been deployed to Asawase.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Asawase, condemned the “heinous act,” assuring justice via social media. The killing, amid ongoing Kusasi-Mamprusi tensions in Bawku, raises fears of reprisals, with police urging public cooperation for leads. The Kusasi community mourns, with leaders like Peter Apuko Awuni calling for calm and enhanced security measures.
This marks the second high-profile killing in Asawase in 2025, following a January incident involving a local businessman. The attack reflects broader regional ethnic tensions, with 2024–2025 Bawku violence claiming over 30 lives. Authorities are investigating possible links to chieftaincy disputes, urging residents to refrain from speculation to prevent escalation.
