President Mahama to Revoke Mining Leases Issued By The NPP Government

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled an aggressive plan to reverse environmental damage caused by mining in Ghana’s protected forest reserves, reaffirming his government’s commitment to environmental conservation.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of 14 newly appointed ministers on Thursday, January 30, 2025, President Mahama declared that all mining leases issued under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for operations in forest reserves would be revoked.

He tasked the new Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, with leading the charge against illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

“Honourable Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, you will be charged with the duty of safeguarding the environment from the marauding galamsey and managing our natural resources effectively,” Mahama stated.

He further announced a government-wide policy banning the issuance of new mining leases for forest reserves, highlighting the need for immediate intervention to combat deforestation, water pollution, and land degradation caused by unregulated mining.

This decisive action forms part of broader efforts by Mahama’s administration to restore ecological balance and hold violators accountable, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s natural resources.
