A man identified as Newel Gavu has been remanded in police custody after being charged with vandalizing the ‘Big Six’ monument at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. The suspect was caught on video destroying the busts of prominent politicians who played a key role in Ghana’s independence.

The Kwabenya Circuit Court, where the case was heard, ordered a psychiatric evaluation of the accused, as the police continue to investigate the incident. The vandalism took place on Saturday, leading to the immediate arrest of Gavu by Airport security.

The Ghana Police Service praised the public and security officials for their vigilance, which led to the suspect’s swift apprehension. The court adjourned the case to September 10, 2024, with further updates expected after the psychiatric report is presented.
