An accountant, Edward Unicorn, has been sentenced to two years in prison by an Adentan Circuit Court after stealing GH¢40,433.50 from the Ghana Police Church. Unicorn, 32, admitted using the stolen funds to play the online betting game Aviator, explaining that his addiction led him to misappropriate church funds in a desperate attempt to win. Despite his guilty plea, he acknowledged that he was unable to seek proper help for his addiction.
The court, presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam, also ordered Unicorn to pay GH¢5,000 in restitution, with GH¢2,775 retrieved from him to be returned to the church. Unicorn, who worked as the accountant for the Ghana Police Church, had been entrusted with the church’s finances but failed to maintain his fiduciary duty.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Anim Darko, revealed that Unicorn’s addiction had consumed him, resulting in significant financial losses. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of gambling addiction and the need for greater support mechanisms.
